Meta is preparing to launch a new artificial intelligence research laboratory dedicated specifically to the pursuit and development of “superintelligence,” significantly intensifying the company’s efforts to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving field of AI innovation.
To accelerate the project’s momentum, Meta has recruited Alexandr Wang, founder and CEO of Scale AI, to join the newly formed lab. This move comes in parallel with ongoing negotiations where Meta is reportedly considering investing billions into Scale AI, an arrangement that would potentially bring Scale’s talent pool under Meta’s umbrella.
According to reports, this initiative follows dissatisfaction expressed by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg over the company’s slower progress compared to AI competitors. In recent months, Zuckerberg has personally led recruiting drives, meeting with leading artificial intelligence researchers and engineers at his residences in Lake Tahoe and Palo Alto. His goal is to quickly build a dedicated team of around fifty top-tier experts, which includes placing a new head at the helm of the AI research division.
Zuckerberg reportedly believes Meta holds significant opportunities and a meaningful advantage in achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI)—a theoretical milestone where AI systems would surpass human capabilities in diverse, complex tasks. To bolster its position, Meta has already begun poaching top researchers from major tech rivals like OpenAI and Google.
The renewed investment in AI development comes shortly after Meta’s announcement that its AI products now achieve over one billion monthly active users, underlining the strategic importance of AI to the company’s future direction.
