Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that artificial intelligence is responsible for writing between 20% to 30% of the company’s code, he announced during a conversation with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at Meta’s recent LlamaCon conference. The remark followed a question from Zuckerberg about the extent to which Microsoft’s software production now relies on AI-generated code.
Nadella mentioned that Microsoft is experiencing varied success with AI across different programming languages. He highlighted that the company has been particularly effective in automating Python code production with AI, while there has been relatively slower progress in languages such as C++.
Previously, Kevin Scott, Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer, had projected an even more sweeping future for AI code generation, stating expectations that by 2030, approximately 95% of all code could be generated by artificial intelligence.
When Nadella asked Zuckerberg about Meta’s usage of AI-generated code, Zuckerberg stated he did not have precise details about the proportion for his company.
The conversation around AI-driven software development has intensified in recent months. On a recent earnings call, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai indicated that more than 30% of Google’s code is now generated by AI systems. However, it’s important to note there is still ambiguity around exactly how companies quantifiably attribute code development to artificial intelligence, suggesting caution in interpreting these figures at face value.
