Google’s Mysterious Move: What’s Really Happening with Your Nest Thermostat?

Google has announced that beginning October 25, it will discontinue support and software updates for its first and second generation Nest Learning Thermostats. The change affects devices originally released in 2011 and 2012, as well as a separate model launched in Europe in 2014.

Owners of these earlier Nest thermostats will no longer have update capabilities and will lose compatibility with the Nest and Google Home apps. Nonetheless, users will continue being able to manually control temperature settings and scheduling directly through their thermostats.

Google explained the move by stating it needs to shift resources toward newer products and innovations: “To fully invest in future advancements and bring the most cutting-edge features to our latest generation of Nest thermostats, we will be transitioning away from supporting three of our oldest devices, each over a decade old.”

Additionally, Google will halt the launch of any new Nest thermostat products in Europe. The company cited challenges in adapting devices to the continent’s unique heating systems, noting that these systems possess specific hardware and software requirements differing considerably between countries. Existing Nest products currently available for purchase in Europe will continue to be sold until stocks run out.
