Google has introduced its AI mode, an advanced question-and-answer style tool, to users in India, the company announced today. The tool is currently in an experimental phase, and interested users will need to opt-in through Google’s Search Labs to access its capabilities.
Once subscribed, users will be able to pose queries in English, although Google has not yet revealed specific timelines or plans for supporting regional Indian languages.
The AI mode enables users to ask complex, nuanced, and multi-part queries, providing detailed and tailored responses. For example, a user might inquire, “My children are 4 and 7 years old, and they’re very energetic. Can you recommend creative indoor activities suitable for small spaces that don’t require expensive equipment, particularly during hot weather?” Users can also refine their searches with follow-up questions for extended interactions.
Earlier this year, Google initially made the AI search mode available to premium subscribers in the United States; following its introduction at the Google IO event in May, the company expanded it to all American users. Since its rollout, Google has continuously enhanced the AI mode by integrating voice search capabilities, image-based queries, shopping functions, and advertising placements.
Given the popularity of voice searches in India, the company noted that Indian users will have immediate access to both voice and image search features. Google’s AI mode operates on a specialized version of the Gemini 2.5 large-language model. According to the company’s data, early users of the AI mode typically engage with longer-form questions—averaging two to three times the length of standard search inquiries.
