Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, continues to enhance its Grok chatbot in an effort to match capabilities offered by competitors like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. In its latest move, announced Wednesday evening, xAI introduced a new “memory” function that allows Grok to recall details from previous user interactions.
This feature means users will enjoy more personalized interactions, as Grok leverages past conversation context to deliver tailored recommendations and advice. However, this additional layer of personalization becomes more effective as users engage more frequently with the chatbot, enabling it to better understand and reflect individual preferences.
Similar functionalities have been a staple in competing products. ChatGPT has included memory-based customization for some time, recently expanding its capabilities to reference entire user chat histories. Google’s Gemini also provides users with persistent memory features designed for more tailored conversations.
According to xAI, Grok’s memory transparency allows users a clear view into what details it retains. Users maintain full control, including the ability to selectively delete specific remembered conversations and details via intuitive interface controls. The “memory” feature is currently available in beta through Grok’s website as well as its iOS and Android applications, but it has not yet rolled out to the European Union or the United Kingdom due to legal restrictions.
While users can disable the feature entirely from their settings menu or individually delete stored memories through the Grok chat interface, xAI announced future plans to integrate memory functionality into Grok’s experience on Musk’s social media platform, X.
