Elon Musk’s X experienced another service outage on Friday, disrupting features and leaving users frustrated, according to numerous complaints shared on social media platforms and confirmed by outage-tracking websites.
From firsthand accounts, visitors to X reported the website and mobile app were operational but severely limited, with core components failing to load or function correctly. Users noticed issues across several essential features, including the algorithm-driven “For You” feed, which displayed no content at all.
Other commonly reported problems included images failing to appear, difficulties with publishing new posts, empty timelines, and the inability to obtain meaningful results through the platform’s built-in search function. Additionally, users experienced significant disruptions to XMoney, the platform’s integrated banking service, rendering financial transactions temporarily impossible for some.
Bugs and intermittent connectivity issues began surfacing shortly before 4 p.m. Eastern Time, drawing thousands of user-generated incident reports. Downtime tracking services documented an extensive influx of complaints during the height of the disruption. Many affected users voiced their frustrations publicly, utilizing competitor platforms like Bluesky and Threads to highlight their struggles and seek assistance.
While the outage appeared widespread, some users reported intermittent restoration of service within hours, suggesting the disruptions were gradually resolving. Nevertheless, as of the latest updates, certain X Developer API services continued to display degraded performance.
This marks the second significant interruption to X’s services within barely more than a week. Previously, on May 22, the platform dealt with a similar wave of technical difficulties, with timelines stuck, messages failing to load, and general functionality compromised for a full day.
Interestingly, today’s incident coincided closely with the rollout of a new direct messaging feature dubbed “XChat.” This beta release followed the temporary suspension of X’s encrypted messaging service just one day earlier, during which platform engineers worked towards improvements. It remains unclear whether the latest update contributed to the disruption, as X has ceased responding directly to press inquiries ever since Elon Musk assumed control of the company.
