Apple is reportedly working on advanced new chipsets for smart glasses, high-powered Macs, and artificial intelligence servers. The new development represents a strategic push by the tech giant to expand into the wearable tech market segment dominated by companies like Meta.
According to industry reports, one of the chips currently under development draws inspiration from the energy-efficient processors used in Apple Watch. Apple aims to mass-produce these chips in collaboration with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) by either the end of next year or in 2027.
Smart glasses appear to be a major priority for Apple, in direct competition with Meta, which has enjoyed significant success with its Ray-Ban Meta products. Since 2023, Meta has sold roughly two million pairs of the popular smart glasses.
Apple is focusing particularly on glasses that utilize camera sensors to digitally map and interpret the wearer’s surroundings. Unlike conventional augmented reality (AR) glasses, these devices reportedly employ artificial intelligence capabilities that enhance user interactions in real-time. One chip specifically targets this technology, designed to efficiently manage cameras and related functions without significantly impacting battery life.
This move underscores Apple CEO Tim Cook’s commitment to entering—and potentially leading—the smart glasses space, a sector poised to witness considerable growth in coming years.
