MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell indicated that President Donald Trump faces significant trouble, citing recent polling data that shows declining support among many of his previously loyal voters. According to O’Donnell, Trump’s persistent economic mismanagement, exacerbated by ongoing tariff fights and trade conflicts, has resulted in voters increasingly turning away from him.
“He has failed every day on the economy and he has surrounded himself with the most incompetent Cabinet in history,” O’Donnell stated. “And the public, including Trump voters, have noticed and turned on Donald Trump.”
While Trump retains a strong core of unwavering supporters, O’Donnell emphasized, it is the marginal swing voters—those crucial to Trump’s electoral victory—who have started shifting against him. Multiple recent polls demonstrate this decline in support. A newly released Fox News poll reveals Trump’s overall approval rating dropping sharply, down five points in just one month. Even more alarming for the president is the erosion in public confidence regarding his handling of the economy—once considered his strongest policy area. The Fox poll found only 38% approve of Trump’s economic leadership, while a Reuters/Ipsos poll painted an even gloomier picture, showing just 37% approval.
Highlighting the severity of this shift, O’Donnell noted: “That number previously was often 20 points higher for Donald Trump.” He suggested voters who initially embraced Trump’s tough stance on tariffs have now felt their direct negative financial effects and are unhappy with the economic fallout.
As Trump’s poll numbers continue to tumble, the risk increases that Republican lawmakers in the Senate and House up for reelection next year may soon distance themselves from the president. O’Donnell predicted these GOP legislators could ultimately abandon Trump entirely if they become convinced he will damage their electoral prospects.
