On Monday, Harvard constitutional law professor Laurence Tribe sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s recent attempt to remove approximately 7,000 foreign students from the prestigious Ivy League university. Tribe described the president’s initiative as “obviously unhinged” and lacking any legal merit.
During an appearance on MSNBC’s program “The Last Word” with host Lawrence O’Donnell, Tribe stated bluntly that Trump has “no idea what he is talking about” and accused him of deliberately spreading misinformation. According to Tribe, the president is simply “slinging around, frankly, B.S.”
“This is a president who hates intellect, who despises the symbol of excellence in the world of higher education around the globe,” Tribe explained during the interview.
Offering direct encouragement to the students targeted by the administration’s threats, Tribe advised them not to feel intimidated or fearful.
“Don’t be scared,” he said. “This guy is a paper tiger. He’s a tinhorn tyrant.”
Tribe pointed to Trump’s poor recent record in the courts as evidence of the weakness of his administration’s threats.
“In May alone, courts across the country—led by judges appointed by both Republicans and Democrats—ruled overwhelmingly against Donald Trump and his attacks against our institutions,” Tribe noted. “His record in these cases? He lost over 95 percent of them.”
